The freedom of flying

Crossing over boundaries

The project is the result of an educational and creative process that led the students to explore a deeply symbolic and universal theme: flying as an expression of freedom, aspiration, discovery, and the overcoming of limits. Using contemporary artistic techniques, the students interpreted the concept of freedom in relation to the airport environment—the quintessential setting for departures, dreams, and new possibilities.
All student projects will be on display at Spazio Immelmann starting April 30th, 2026, and are open to the public during the hours listed. The exhibition of the sketches will accompany the public through to the final stage of the project, which will culminate in the creation and installation of the winning artwork on the shelter of the former Pollicino bus stop on Via Sorio, scheduled for May 25, 2026.
Among the works submitted, one was selected to be developed as a permanent installation, marking the concrete transition from design concept to artwork in the urban space.

The decision to exhibit the entire body of work stems from a desire to highlight the students’ significant creative effort and the quality of the process developed in collaboration with their instructors: each proposal represents a unique vision and a fundamental component of the creative process. Showcasing all the projects allows us to share the richness of the work accomplished, offering a comprehensive view of the artistic and educational experience the class has undergone.
This initiative is particularly significant because it offers students a real opportunity to put themselves to the test outside the school setting, engaging with real spaces, the public, and clients. Experiences of this kind represent a crucial step in the training of young artists, allowing them to develop awareness, a sense of responsibility for their projects, and the ability to engage with the urban environment.

A key role is played by professors Sandra Bertocco, Ornella Caldon, Annamaria Rosin and Federico Soffiato, who guide students with expertise and sensitivity through educational programs that combine artistic research with personal growth, offering high-quality learning opportunities geared toward their future careers. The project is part of the vision of Heron Air, the company managing Padua Airport, which has long promoted an active dialogue between the airport infrastructure and the local community. Through the Terminal Urbano project and the Spazio Immelmann, Heron Air reaffirms its commitment to opening the airport to the city, transforming it into a vibrant, accessible, and dynamic space capable of hosting initiatives dedicated to art, culture, and youth creativity. Giving space to schools and young artists means investing in the future, nurturing talent, and offering concrete opportunities for expression and growth. “The Freedom of Flight” fits fully into this vision, becoming not only an art exhibition but also a symbol of openness, connection, and a shared vision among institutions, schools, and the community.
